With a degree in biology, I somehow ended up in mining research. My scientific background has always inspired my science fiction stories and frequently sneaks into my mysteries.

I’ve been creating stories all my life, beginning with entertaining the neighbourhood kids with incredible adventures. Over the years I’ve written several books, most of which are languishing at the back of my file cabinet. But there are a few that stand out from the rest.

The first book I ever wrote was a classic Star Trek novel. I was thrilled when the publisher asked to see the entire manuscript. Though it was rejected, it gave me the drive to keep writing. Another science fiction novel (inspired because I passed someone on the street and they said “hello”) was abandoned when I tried to drag in aliens who really didn’t want to be there… Actually it’s still too painful to talk about. Another book in progress was banished to the file cabinet when I started considering interesting ways to kill off the main character. Never a good sign.

Then several years ago I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which gave me an opportunity to try writing something different. It inspired the idea for another mystery novel, which was published by Renaissance Press. Journey of a Thousand Steps, is the story of Naya, a marathon runner, who is suddenly disabled by MS. She is forced to turn sleuth in order to find her missing friend. And soon became the first book in the Naya Investigates series.

In the sequel, Death by Association, our intrepid sleuth tracks a serial killer.

  1. Hi, Madona.
I didn’t know all of that. But then I didn’t know you very well ‘back then’.
Good luck in your writing and I hope you will let me know when another novel comes out. And if I make it to Ottawa, I’ll purchase them.

  2. Madona, I have finished reading your novel that you gave to Anne and me at the restaurant, on the way to Maureen’s committal. You spin a great yarn. Through your characterization of Naya and Valerie you have sensitized me to the possibilities and challenges unique to them. You are a superb writer. You are a word wizard. Anne is getting ready to read the book.
    Love and blessings, Gerry Cooke
